- Introduction The new 12-classroom Music School of Chalkida is intended for the learning of musical instruments alongside the regular curriculum in an extended schedule. The architectural design took into account the building program of the music school, the morphology of the terrain, and of course, the orientation.
- Bioclimatic Design The architectural design was made to ensure the primary goal of bioclimatic design and the improvement of the microclimate in the area, aiming at thermal comfort throughout the year, energy saving, and the rational management of available natural resources, utilizing the unique natural characteristics of the area. Additionally, modern construction specifications and installations were utilized to ensure functional adequacy and sustainability. Furthermore, accessibility to all areas of the school for people with special needs was ensured. The classrooms are oriented east-west with large openings to the south and small ones to the north.
- Building Layout The Music School of Chalkida building program includes individual music instrument teaching rooms, in addition to the classrooms and laboratories. It is also planned to create a multipurpose hall for concerts and events. The school will also have a dining hall and a library.
- Infrastructure and Facilities On the ground floor, at the entrance, a large covered reception area is formed to meet the need for sheltering the courtyard on rainy days as well as for physical education. The corridors on the west side of the floor end at the same level as the upper floor.
- Classroom Layout The classrooms are organized into two wings around an atrium: one wing includes the classrooms and the other the music activities. The southern orientation of the classrooms and the addition of horizontal and vertical architectural elements on the facades enhance the bioclimatic character of the building. At the same time, the composition of volumes and the alternation of covered and open spaces aim to encourage dialogue with the city.
- Outdoor Spaces The building with the surrounding courtyards is placed at a uniform level (+22.0m sea level). In the outdoor spaces, an effort is made to maintain the natural level of the ground as much as possible, as well as the existing vegetation, such as the existing olive trees. All outdoor spaces have the possibility of continuous control and supervision. All outdoor spaces, except for the areas covered by parking spaces and sports fields, will be planted. The existing vegetation will be preserved as much as possible, enriched with species that thrive in the area, and the olive trees on the plot that can be transplanted will be utilized. On the northern side of the plot, dense vegetation of evergreens will be placed to protect the area from northern winds. A 100 cubic meter tank has been planned for the collection of rainwater for watering the landscaped vegetation.
- Energy Efficiency The entire building complex will be thermally insulated (external thermal insulation) according to KENAK, and its energy class will be at least B. Additionally, suitable shading devices will be installed to allow the sun in during the winter months and to shade it in the summer months.
- Accessibility People with reduced mobility can move to all points of the building, as an appropriately designed elevator, WC for people with disabilities, and two ramps with a 5% slope, one in the eastern courtyard towards the school entrance and the other in the western courtyard, are provided.
