Skyros Medieval Castle Restoration – Architectural Study for Enhancing the Surrounding Area of Monuments and Creating Visitor Routes
Skyros Castle: A Precious Landmark
Skyros Castle is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore medieval fortification architecture. Through this experience, visitors can admire the Castle Town, built upon the rock, while also enjoying the breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea.
Skyros: An Island of Natural Beauty and History
Skyros is renowned for its natural beauty, sandy beaches, and traditional Greek heritage. It also stands out for its connection to the mythical figure of Achilles, the hero of Homer’s Iliad, who is said to be buried on the island. Within walking distance of the Castle, visitors can explore the Archaeological Museum of Skyros, which houses important artifacts such as vases, sculptures, and tools that narrate the island’s rich history.
Goals of the Enhancement Study
The current enhancement study, as a continuation of the restoration program, focuses on the preservation and showcasing of the monument’s authentic materials, such as plasterwork. At the same time, it emphasizes joint repointing, structural reinforcement, and the completion of existing masonry structures.
New Infrastructure and Visitor-Friendly Spaces
The study includes the creation of access routes using reversible and archaeologically friendly materials, while also planning new resting areas for improved visitor comfort.
Educational Materials and Boosting Tourism Activity
As part of the enhancement, the project will include educational materials, feature lighting, and other interventions. The aim is to create a high-quality experience for visitors, strengthening the historical identity of the monument and boosting tourism in the region.
A Vision for the Castle Town
The intervention seeks to strengthen the connection between the monument and the settlement, preserving its identity and history. At the same time, it aims to foster a positive spirit among residents and support the development of the local community through the upgraded surrounding area of the monument.
